Anhui police cracked a case of using the “dark web” to sell citizens’ personal information, seized nearly 100 million pieces of information

The reporter learned from the Public Security Bureau of Tongling City, Anhui Province a few days ago that the local police detected a case of using the “dark web” to sell citizens’ personal information, arrested 2 criminal suspects and seized nearly 100 million pieces of citizens’ personal information.

In December 2019, the Yangjiashan Police Station of Tongguan Branch of the Public Security Bureau of Tongling City received a clue: Someone used the “dark web” to sell citizens’ personal information. The information included citizens’ names and mobile phone numbers. The local police set up a task force to find out the identity information of the suspect—Hu Mou, a Jiangsu native who temporarily lives in the area under the jurisdiction of Yangjiashan Police Station. On December 17, police arrested Hu and his associate Wu in Hu’s rental house.

After interrogation, Hu and Wu confessed to their crimes. According to Hu’s account, he and Wu both studied software programming at training institutions. In April 2019, they jointly operated an online company in Tongling City. Because the company’s income was average, Hu thought of this way to sell citizens’ personal information through the “dark web.” In a few months, the two persons have trafficked nearly 100 million pieces of citizens’ personal information.

At present, the relevant suspects have been transferred to the prosecutors for prosecution.
